And we said, why can't you  come through the gate? That's for the International Olympic Committee. I said isn't it a shame. I wonder if they can swim, I said to the fellow. He said what are you talking about? I said if we ca- we're running it, if we can't come through the gate, I'm sorry, there won't - believe it or not, there will not be any races at all, none whatsoever. And then the - then the International Federation said that uh, the local people said, uh, when the games are up, you can't come through that gate see. And we said, why can't you  come through the gate? That's for the International Olympic Committee. I said isn't it a shame. I wonder if they can swim, I said to the fellow. He said what are you talking about? And so uh, so you better go - better- better go off and ask Mr. Brundage if he's got a swimming costume. But uh, anyhow we had some difficulties like that, but it was really interesting. My- my- my - my own way, my - my way, the stand, the stand was above the pool, say up about 7 foot up above the pool and the stand went up, we walked around under- around the pool. Simple. So I, my wife of course was sitting up in the VIP section. And so uh, so you better go - better- better go off and ask Mr. Brundage if he's got a swimming costume. But uh, anyhow we had some difficulties like that, but it was really interesting. So I- I'm busy, I'm working. And uh when I look up, you know, when, getting towards the opening, there's my wife sitting there and she has 2 gentlemen, one on her one side and one on the other side. And guess who they were? One was Mr. Edward Heath [laughter] the Prime Minister of England, and the other one was Willy Brandt [laughter] So I- I'm busy, I'm working. And uh, so all the time she's sitting there looking after them. So away the games went, and it went off very well. And uh she uh subsequently, when it was over, I said gee, how did you enjoy yourself? Oh, she said, I had a lovely time, she said. I had two fellas, she said, they were very good you know. She said one of them was a foreigner, I don't know who he was. But she said, uh, we got on very well, she said - The no- [Janet] The German. [Bill] No, the Chancellor. [Janet] Chancellor. that was the one time where we have had disqualified at the Olympic Games somebody in a - in a swimming race, uh, the only time. And what happened was, uh, the winner of the uh 200- was it, 400 metres freestyle, our chap was second by 100th of a second, you know. [Janet] Mmm. [Bill] Only a young, young woman. [Janet] She wouldn't be that old. so, a good Australian see, I said to her "get stuck into 'em Bev". And she's "don't worry" she says "l'll eat 'em". And she did.
